Nick Caraman · London

About

Nick Caraman photographs weddings across London and the South East, quietly and without direction, from town hall ceremonies to full days in the country.

Approach

I started photographing properly after meeting my wife in Italy, for no better reason than wanting to keep hold of what the days felt like. That has not really changed. I am married with two children now and still the family photographer, which is where the name came from.

The work is documentary. I photograph what happens rather than arranging it, which means staying out of the way for most of the day and letting the room behave normally. Laughter, the odd tear, the quiet look across a room before anybody else notices: that is the day worth keeping, and none of it survives being posed.

Twenty minutes of portraits is usually all I ask for. Everything else is yours. Galleries come back in about a week, edited in full, ready to download and share.

Most of the year is spent in the London register offices, Old Marylebone Town Hall, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Islington Town Hall, Hackney Town Hall, Camden Town Hall among them, with country houses, churches and the occasional wedding abroad in between. I work across London, Surrey, Richmond, Twickenham, Kingston and travel for destination weddings.

I take a limited number of weddings each year so that every couple gets my full attention, which is also why the diary tends to close early for the summer.
